Henderson Week 5

Chapter 7 was about web scenes.  It first introduced the basics of 3d maps and web scenes and then explained how to navigate them and symbolize them properly. The first tutorial was just about navigating web scenes using the scene viewer. The second tutorial taught me how to create a thematic web scene. I created a local scene and then added layers from ArcGIS Online. I then learned how to change what attribute to visualize and that there are different ways to symbolize those attributes (both 2d and 3d). I then could change the color and range of the histogram. There were many different ways to style the layer to make it fit what this scene was meant to be used for. The third tutorial had me add two different layers and symbolize all of the different points. I had trouble with this tutorial at first; nothing was showing up until I opened it on a different browser but after that it was quite easy.  7.4 was about adding new features that could be moved along the z axis (above or below ground). I was able to put helicopters in the sky and also add buildings to the scene. 7.5 was about editing features in the web scene. I was able to add cars to the scene and learn how to change the size and direction they were facing. In the last tutorial I learned how to do basic analysis in a web scene. I was able to add shadows based on the day and time and watch the shadows change as the day progressed.

If I were to do an assignment from this chapter, I would create a web scene of campus and add different features to represent different areas of campus, e.g., cars for parking lots. I think it could be cool to create a web scene based on a place I have been because I could make it realistic and almost like a campus directory.

Henderson Week 4

Chapter 6 first had me create a dashboard with 911 calls and incident reports. On the dashboard, I started by adding a map and then added numerous other elements. I added a gauge and changed the colors based on percentages; I added a list of the 10 most recent incidents, which was updated in real-time. I also made a pie chart, a serial chart, and a header. I was also able to reorganize them on the screen so that the map still took up the majority of it. I also added a category selector, which is added to the header so that when you toggle it on and off, it shows different elements. I also had to write expressions for Arcade to change the highlighting for different elements. For the fifth tutorial, I created a time-enabled feature layer. I created a new item and made it time zone specific. For the last tutorial I animated time series data. This was similar to something I did in GEOG 291 so it was more familiar to me. I did this by accessing map properties and creating a time slider. This was used to show population change in the US from 1790-2000 1 decade at a time. I was able to customize the slider and created an app for the slider. For this chapter I would choose to create a dashboard for incident reports in Delaware County by using the data from GEOG 291.

Henderson week 3

Chapter 3 focused on different parts of ArcGIS. I was able to create a web map using both 2D and 3D maps. I learned how to organize my web map by reshaping and moving my different items to look and function the best. This entire tutorial was very easy to understand and follow. The entire chapter used the web map and showed me how to do many different things with it. Not only did I learn how to add maps, but I also learned how to create different kinds of widgets as well. Each tutorial walked me through a different step of creating a web map.  In the last tutorial, I learned how to navigate multiple pages, which I struggled with at first, but I was able to retrace my steps and figure out what went wrong. For chapter 3 I could create a web map for Delaware County crime by using charts and widgets to show where the crimes are most prominent and what kinds of crimes they are.

Chapter 4 first started by explaining different things GIS on a mobile device can be used for which I then used throughout my tutorials. The first half of chapter 4 taught me how to create, publish and take a survey through ArcGIS Survey123. This is one of my favorite things I’ve learned how to do because it was so easy to navigate and can be used in so many subjects. I also liked that you are also to make it local to you by changing the location when creating the survey. After creating the survey I was able to take the survey on my phone and then look at the statistics on my computer. Then I learned how to make an editable feature layer which I did for the rest of the tutorials. I also learned how to access Field Maps and other extensions on both my phone and computer. For this chapter I would create a survey for students on campus to be able to report areas that need to be cleaned up do to trash.

Henderson Week 2

Chapter 1: The first chapter highlights what GIS is all about, and what it is most commonly used for. Government agencies, business and research centers ahve all started using GIS for different applications. The tutorials were fairly easy to get through. I was able to access all of the data and complete the steps as necessary. The most interesting thing I found in chapter 1 was being able to add attachments to popups on a map. I understood most of the instructions because a lot of it was taught during GEOG 291 as well. Tutorial 1 had me create a new item and learn how to put it into a new folder, add photos and share my item publicly. 1-2 was about adding fields to my layer editing the data for the fields. 1-3 allowed mee to familiarize myself with both the content and settings toolbars and what each button does. I symbolized the  points and created popups. In the last tutorial I created an instant web app , as well as showing me the different views for the maps and how to publish the map to the public.

Chapter 2: The beginning of the chapter talks about different types of layers and what their most common uses are. It also goes over the basics of Pop ups and ArcGIS Arcade which is an expression language that allows you to display information where there is no attribute field. I also learned all about StoryMaps which I find to be the most interesting use for Web GIS as it can be used for so many different things and is so easy to understand. 2-1 was about geocoding to create a feature layer. The second tutorial was on symbolizing in different ways and how to use different effects. 2-3 was about creating and editing pop ups on a map by creating expressions. 2-4 allowed me to add new content to all of the popups . The fifth tuorial was on how to create a story from start to finish and the last one was on using swipe blocks and express maps.

For chapter 1 an application I could create is landmarks throughout Delaware County or its Key Attractions. For Chapter 2 I would choose to create a feature layer on current unused agricultural space in the county.

Henderson week 1

My name is Camryn Henderson and I am a freshman from Wadsworth, OH. I am an ENVS and Theater double major with a PG minor. I took GEOG 291 in the first half of the semester and am excited to expand my GIS knowledge.

In 291 I looked a little bit into my ArcGIS online account but I looked more in depth this week. One interesting thing I found was the different categories in the Training section. There are numerous different programs to help familiarize you with ArcGIS which I think will be very helpful for the rest of the semester. The other interesting thing was the ArcGIS blog which has many articles discussing updates and different things you can do with ArcGIS.

One really cool thing I learned from the Introduction page was all of the different ways you can share your work. You can create notebooks, and web apps, and collaborate with other users to make something together. The other cool thing is that once you are a member of ArcGIS online you are able to communicate with other members and all of your work will be saved in a cloud.

During the course one thing I had not known about was what all of the different app builders that you can use. I was able to learn how to use Instant App which allowed me to quickly make my map an interactive web map. Another interesting thing I learned in the course was about the different levels of sharing you can have for a map. Private, Group, Organization and Public all provide different levels of privacy for a map and are used for different things.

Two courses I find interesting were “Collect Data in the Field using ArcGIS apps” and “ArcGIS Online Fundamentals”

The first map I found was about the migration patterns of Great White Sharks off the coast of Australia. They tracked sharks using GPS and the heat map technique to show where most Great Whites tend to reside during their migration period.

The second map was about criminal activity (specifically burglary) in a county in Florida. The yellows and reds indicate a higher amount of burglary than the blue areas. I found this on a website that gave a tutorial on how to best symbolize criminal activity on GIS maps.
