University Communications – Design & Digital Communications Internship

Are you interested in digital design for print? Do you want to learn how to edit and build websites? Have an eye for great photography? Consider applying for the Office of University Communications Design & Digital Communications Internship. The internship is for the 2024 spring semester, pays minimum wage ($10.10/hour), and will result in print and digital design pieces for your portfolio. Good luck!

Supervisor: Lindsay Mauter, Director of Admission Communications & Project Manager (Office of University Communications). Commitment: 6 hours per week. Term: Half-Year, Spring 2024 semester.

Description of Internship: The Design & Digital Communications Intern will collaborate in a creative team environment to design collateral for print and digital use to share the OWU story. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable design and photo-editing skills, with an interest in web content writing/design. Digital Communications tasks may include auditing owu.edu web pages for content quality and accuracy, writing new content and selecting photos for digital platforms, and building new pages and features using the BigTree content management system. Design tasks may include executing design assignments on a weekly basis, preparing files for outside vendors, and learning to use required industry software (Adobe Creative Cloud Suite), production management software, etc.

This internship will be beneficial for anyone interested in a communications field, such as digital design, graphic design, content development, journalism, and marketing. The student will obtain marketable experience in print publication, graphic design, and web content management/design while adhering to all University brand standards. The student will leave the internship with a portfolio of work to aid in their overall job readiness. (All students who apply must supply 2-3 print or digital design samples.)

Examples of Intern Assignments:

  • Researching, reviewing, and updating both written content and visuals on existing owu.edu web pages.

  • Using Adobe InDesign to create brochures, postcards, fliers, posters, digital ads/graphics
  • Proofreading and fact-checking information prior to publication in electronic and print forms.

Required Skills:

  • Interest in website content development, page design/user experience, and writing for the web
  • Proficiency in print layout and design
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (In Design, Illustrator, and Photoshop)
