Sept. 3-10 – Mosquito Experiment in Progress! Don’t Toss the Cups!

Dr. Anderson’s Ecology and the Human Future Class will be running a socially distanced science experiment where students place two Red Solo cups, each containing a wooden popsicle stick and a little water, in various locations around campus. They are testing hypotheses related to factors that affect where female mosquitoes (who lay eggs in water) prefer to lay eggs. The experiment will run from Thursday, September 3 to Thursday, September 10. If you see these cups sitting in odd locations, please do not disturb them! This is a big class, so you may see a lot of cups! The cups will be discarded after September 10 before the eggs have a chance to hatch and there is no way to catch mosquito-borne diseases from the eggs, so there are no health risks associated with this study or with accidental contact with the cups. Thank you and feel free to ask a student in BOMI 233 about their hypothesis and their findings!
