Please join Dr. Mary Anne Lewis Cusato’s “Contemporary Franco-Arab Cultural Exchanges” class as they welcome French-Algerian singer and activist Alima Hamel and musician Vincent Ferrand. Much of Hamel’s work deals with the Algerian “Black Decade” (1991-2002), a period of brutal civil war in Algeria. Since the 2005 Charter for Peace and Reconciliation forbade any kind of representation of this moment in history, the act of singing becomes a veritable act of resistance.
Hamel and Ferrand will speak with students at 2:10 p.m. in University Hall 314 and will perform in Gray Chapel at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 28. All are welcome to both events! Venez nombreux!
