Join SAGE for a succulent fundraiser March 26-28 over the noon hour in Ham-Wil and learn more about the wage gap!
While there are legal protections for equal pay for race, religion, gender, age, national origin, or disability under the Equal Pay Act of 1963, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is well documented that a gap exists. Statistically men make more than women for the same work. White people earn more than people of color. Breaking down the wage gap based on race and sex: for every $1 a white man makes, women and people of color make less due to systematic bias.
Our succulent sale is based on the wage gap. We ask people to self-identify with a race/sex combination listed and suggested they base their donation accordingly. Prices are based on how much different sexes and races make. We aren’t forcing anyone to pay a specific price. We aren’t intentionally discriminating against anyone. You choose to pay the price you wish, though we would like you to participate in the spirit of this exercise. This is a voluntary donation to a non-profit, Kaleidoscope Youth Center! The goal of the exercise is to raise money for a great cause and raise awareness for the wage gap.
We organized the succulent sale because the wage gap SUCCS. We ask people to donate based on what their identities make in the US workforce. All of our prices were based on: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/07/01/racial-gender-wage-gaps-persist-in-u-s-despite-some-progress/.
