Join us for a talk on March 21 @ 11 a.m. in Merrick 301 by professor, researcher, and author Dr. Kleber Amancio!

Race, Modernity, and Agency in Brazilian Art
This lecture focuses on the life of Arthur Timotheo da Costa (1882–1922), an Afro-Brazilian painter active in the early 20th century. Discover how his work engages with the challenges posed by racism and whitening projects of the time. The talk will explore his aesthetic choices, representations of modernity, and the subtle and explicit forms of resistance present in his paintings, reflecting on his marginalization in Brazilian art history and his significance for a broader understanding of modernism in Brazil.

Dr. Kleber Amancio is Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia.  His areas of expertise include Afro-Latin American art, 19th-century Brazilian history, and Brazilian art history. Dr. Amancio is the author of several academic publications, including the article “White-Brazilian Art History and the Limits of Black Humanity.” He is also a columnist for Brazil’s black newspaper Alma Preta, which focuses on art and the Afro-diaspora, and the host of a podcast dedicated to interviewing Afro-Brazilian visual artists.
