House Project: Fundraising for Indigenous Nonprofit

Hello! As a member of the SAGE SLU, my house project is focused on emphasizing SAGE’s mission of equity and recognition of intersectional identities. To honor the life of Nex Benedict of the Choctaw Nation, my house project will be fundraising to support Lakota Youth Development. LYD is a nonprofit organization that was founded to create a community for indigenous individuals of the Lakota Nation to work towards “reclaiming Lakota language, culture and spirituality by promoting education and healthy lifestyles for our youth through culturally based strategies.”

OWU students have established a community partnership with LYD and their director, Marla Bull Bear, for several years after sending students to volunteer with them over Spring Break on service trips. Our continued support through this project is incredibly meaningful towards being consistent, active allies in combating the injustices and inequity that America’s native populations have faced.

To learn more about their mission, please visit: https://www.lakotayouthdevelopment.org/

As SAGE’s active contribution, we will be matching all donations made up to the maximum allocated budget for individual house projects. You can be the difference in helping keep our Native Peoples’ heritage alive and thriving. Please contact me if you would like to donate towards this fundraiser, and consider sharing this project with friends and family!
