Health Tip of the Week

“I have a three hour lab that normally turns into 4 hours. What should I eat to stop my stomach from obnoxiously grumbling?”

This is a common concern, especially with those poor souls that are taking O-Chem. I’ve been there and know the struggle, so what should we do?

To stay fuller for longer it is best to eat foods that are rich in protein, fiber and healthy fats. Good foods to keep you satiated for longer include; eggs, avocados, quinoa, beans, lentils, chickpeas, sweet potatoes, broccoli, almonds and peanuts. In the morning having oatmeal with almonds and fruit with some eggs on the side is a perfect breakfast to keep you full. It is also great to take advantage of “Toast Tuesdays” at Ham-Wil. Get some toast with avocado and egg and your stomach won’t interrupt your professor in your next class.

For lunch, try to leave some room on your plate for hummus and vegetables. Smith always has a hummus option at the salad bar, I would recommend piling it on your plate. If you are at Ham-Wil, try a side of cottage cheese and fruit! The cottage cheese has a high amount of protein that will keep you full for longer as well.
