Are you a pre-med or pre-nursing student looking for an opportunity to get direct healthcare experience while helping a local family in need? I am looking for a responsible student willing to assist a local man with his in-home dialysis needs while his wife (and full-time caregiver) is away for the week of Feb. 5-10. Your primary duties would be:
- connect/disconnect the patient from his in-home dialysis machine
- record his daily vitals upon disconnection from the unit (glucose, blood pressure, pulse, and temp – info entered in a spreadsheet)
- record ultrafiltration data (UF) provided by the automated unit
- drain and dispose of waste bags
- clean and dress exit wound on the stomach daily (where the catheter is located)
- dispense daily medications — meds will already be prepared in a daily pill box for dispensing
The task would require you to be available in the evening to connect the unit, in the morning to disconnect the unit and take vitals/dispense meds, and in the afternoon to drain and dispose of waste. This individual lives ~one mile from the OWU campus, This individual’s caregiver emphasizes that personal responsibility is by far the most important characteristic for a student taking on this duty. She cares for her husband 24/7 and is understandably concerned that whoever takes on this role is trustworthy and committed so she can feel safe leaving her husband in their care. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact me directly at ddmarkwa@owu.edu or 614-330-5741 and we can discuss additional details.
