Their nominator wrote, “On Tuesday, February 25th, a most remarkable event occurred on the Ohio Wesleyan campus. What I saw was a model of civil discourse, a gathering of people from vastly different political perspectives. They had come together to learn about the importance of understanding the relationships between military actions, the military industrial complex, civil rights and liberties, and the related environmental damage. Perhaps the most important part of the evening was the conversations that had to have occurred BEFORE the event – the conversations in which student leaders realized that they could be united by a shared interest. A small event can serve as inspiration. It can motivate all of us to include others more widely.”
Nominator: Sally Leber, Director of Community Service Learning
Zoology Students (Jacquelyn Keslar, Emery Manz, Moira Meehan, Denecia Young, Josh Pletcher)
Students were looking forward to the annual visit of OWU alumnus/Duquesne professor Dr. Brady Porter to teach a museum bird study skin preparation workshop. However, the staff member received an email he wasn’t going to make it due to bad weather. With only one hour of notice in the morning, the students stepped up and spent eight hours teaching how to prepare bird study skins. Then, unfortunately, the power failed a half hour into the workshop so then the students, including Zoology Museum student curator, packed up the entire lab and moved it to another lab with windows for light. These students are dedicated, mentors, and creative problem-solvers.
Nominator: Lisa Tabak, Laboratory Manager
