2026 Lyman Lecture, Oct. 27, 6:30 p.m., Benes Room, HWCC

The 2026 Corinne Lyman Lecture in International Studies will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Benes Room of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.

Muetter Tohti, a human rights researcher specializing in documenting and analyzing the Chinese government’s actions in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, will present: “Silencing Voices Across Borders: China’s Repression of the Uyghur Diaspora.”

Her lecture examines how Beijing extends repression beyond China’s borders through surveillance, threats, and pressure on relatives, and how these practices reshape everyday life, family relationships, and political participation within the Uyghur diaspora. Connecting individual experiences with broader questions of state power, sovereignty, and human rights, it explores both the personal costs of speaking out and the ways Uyghurs continue to resist. It also asks what meaningful protection requires from host governments and institutions when crossing a border does not put repression out of reach.
