On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Strand Theatre in downtown Delaware will host a free screening of “42,” the Jackie Robinson-Branch Rickey story, and a panel discussion featuring OWU alum Rickey’s grandson, Branch Rickey III.
The elder Rickey, a member of OWU’s Class of 1904, helped break Major League Baseball’s color barrier when, as president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, he signed Robinson in 1945. The younger Rickey, a 1967 OWU graduate, also built a career in baseball, including serving as president of Minor League Baseball’s Pacific Coast League.

The panel discussion also will feature Larry Doby Jr., son of Larry Doby, the first Black player in the American League; legendary Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman; and Sidney Carlson White, assistant curator at the Jackie Robinson Museum. Baseball historian Dr. Leslie Heaphy of Kent State University will moderate.
The Strand, 28 E. Winter St., is hosting the event as part of the statewide “Ohio Goes to the Movies” celebration, held in conjunction with America’s 250th anniversary.
