In response to inspection feedback from the Delaware Fire Department, we are providing Ohio Fire Code information regarding the use of power strips and storage spaces on campus. Please follow these requirements to help keep Ohio Wesleyan compliant and safe.
Power Strips
- In general, avoid plugging appliances and electronics into power strips, which is a code violation.
- UL-listed power strips are acceptable and can be used, but here are some common violations that we receive when they are used:
- Power strips must plug directly into fixed outlets and may not be plugged into extension cords or other power strips. Fixed wall outlets and cubicle wall outlets are fine.
- Power strips cannot be used to power appliances such as mini-fridges, microwaves, coffee makers, or portable heaters. Appliances, even small ones, generally need to be plugged into fixed outlets, per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Power strips are permissible for computers, chargers, printers, office equipment, and fans.
Campus Storage
- In general, nothing should be stored in a mechanical room that blocks access to equipment, including electric panels. In addition, stored items cannot block electric panels in closets, hallways, or other spaces.
- Nothing should be stacked within 3 feet of the ceiling.
Thank you for your compliance with these Ohio Fire Code guidelines. If you have questions, please contact Daren Lehman (dhlehman@owu.edu) or OWU Facilities (facilities@owu.edu).
