Don’t Get Hooked by Phishing

Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Week 2 – Phishing

Phishing emails and texts are designed to trick you into clicking links or giving away personal information. They often look urgent, official, or too good to be true.

Watch out for:

  • Emails or texts asking you to click a link, scan a QR code, or log in to “verify” your account or personal information.
  • Messages that pressure you to act quickly, such as “respond now” or “your account will be closed.”
  • Spelling errors, strange email addresses, or unusual requests.
  • Promises of prizes, unsolicited job offers, or other items of value.

Safe practices for links & attachments:

  • Hover over links before clicking—check where they really lead.
  • Never open unexpected attachments, even if they look like PDFs or Word docs.
  • When in doubt, verify the sender directly instead of trusting the message.

💡 Pro Tip: If it feels off—or too good to be true—it probably is. Don’t click, don’t download. Report suspicious messages to helpdesk@owu.edu

Stay alert. Don’t take the bait!
