The Department of Journalism and Communication has added a second section of COMM 101: Communication Theory to the Fall 2025 catalog. Anyone can sign up, and there are no prerequisites. The course satisfies the Listen, Imagine, Understand Gen Ed Competency.
Communication theory says that all living beings, whether they are plants, animals, human beings, communicate through sound, speech, visible changes, body movements, gestures, or in the best possible way to make the others aware of their thoughts, feelings, problems, happiness, or any other information. Another model of communication says it is simply the process of transferring information from the sender to the recipient, where the recipient decodes the information and acts accordingly.
This course will review the primary theories in interpersonal, group, and mass communication on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:40-4 p.m. Incoming first-year and transfer students who would like to add this class can contact academicadvising@owu.edu for assistance.
