Feb. 8 @ 7 p.m. – Lecture on Antisemitism, Racism, and Whiteness

“The Holocaust Makes Us ‘Black’–Israel Makes Us ‘White’: Jews, Race, and Antisemitism”

Are Jews white? Is anti-Zionism discrimination against Jews? In recent years, anti-racist activists have turned their attention to the dynamic between Palestinians and the State of Israel. Many American Jews, however, see no tension between their anti-racist commitments and their defense of Israel. In this presentation, Dr. Elliot Ratzman will help clarify the entangled histories of Jews, racism, and Zionism.

Dr. Ratzman teaches courses on ethics, Judaism and race in the Religion Department at Earlham College. He is a long-time activist for racial and economic justice, health care equity, and Jewish/Palestinian reconciliation. He is finishing his first book, Zipporah’s Knife: A Jewish Reckoning with Race.
