Supervisor: Cole Hatcher, Director of Media and Community Relations (Office of University Communications)
Commitment: 6 hours per week
Term: Full Year, Fall 2023-Spring 2024
Description of Internship: The intern will work with the University Communications Office to report and write news and feature articles, especially student reflections of their OWU Connection experiences. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable writing and editing skills, with an interest in public relations and/or journalism. Duties will include conducting email and in-person interviews, writing news articles and, possibly, press releases, and taking photos. Assignments may include sharing information about Theory-to-Practice Grants, Travel-Learning Courses, student research, internships, study abroad, service projects, and more.
The student will obtain marketable experience in writing publication-ready news articles and press releases as well as enhanced skills in identifying news, preparing for and conducting interviews, researching/verifying facts for publication, proofreading, photography, and related skills. (All students who apply must supply 2-3 writing samples – links to online articles are acceptable.)
Examples of Intern Assignments:
- Researching and writing news articles about Ohio Wesleyan students and faculty, and, possibly, press releases about visiting lecturers and upcoming events.
- Attending OWU events as a campus reporter – conducting interviews, generating online news articles, and taking photos/videos.
- Proofreading and fact-checking information prior to publication.
Required Skills:
- Strong writing and spelling ability required.
- Awareness of/basic knowledge of Associated Press Style required.
- Majors in Journalism, Communication, or English preferred, but others are encouraged to apply.
