2025 Melvin Van Peebles Symposium @ OWU – Submit Your Presentation Proposals Now!

Ohio Wesleyan is hosting the second Melvin Van Peebles Symposium in March 2025 and is accepting proposals till Oct. 30, 2024, to present at this groundbreaking event!

The symposium was launched in 2023 to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Van Peebles, a 1953 OWU graduate and trailblazing Black filmmaker, by providing a platform to review, study, and share the historical and contemporary impact of his work. The 2025 symposium seeks to recognize emerging artists, artistry, and scholarship that advance Black art, history, and culture.

The theme of the 2025 symposium is “Disruption!! Signal Fires, Reckoning, and Jubilee Through Black Art.” Read more about the March 28-30, 2025, event and submit your presentation proposals using this link.

Presentations may engage in thought, action, and cultural production related to Black arts directly or indirectly from all relevant disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives; within various social, political, historical, and/or geographical contexts; and differing cultural mediums, including but not limited to, film, theater, music, art, literature, and business.

The event will include ticketed sessions, as well as free events open to the community. Ticket information, including discounts for the OWU community and free tickets for student volunteers, will be forthcoming.

Please save the date and plan to be part of this important biennial event!
