Sally Mann

1951

American (United States)

Sally Mann has been one of the most celebrated, and contested, contemporary photographers in the last 40 years. In the 1980’s Mann became known for her series Immediate Family, which both documented and posed her young children on the family’s 400 acre farm in rural Virginia. In the 1990’s Mann shifted her focus to landscapes. Her aesthetic balances a sense of nostalgia with the sense of hidden danger. The visual sensibility of her images is enhanced by her use of 19th century photographic technology, such as a large format camera and the wet plate collodion development processes.
