Michael Berman

1956

American (United States)

"Michael Berman is a dynamic contemporary artist who blends the medium of photography with painting, by collaging fragments of photographs into larger canvases or drawings where he also uses conte crayon and acrylic paints, and pencil. He then buffs the surface of the paintings and drawings that creates a shimmering translucent surface that lends itself to the incorporation of fragmented images appearing within the paintings. Although Michael is a young artist, he has already been reviewed in Art in America and has his work included in many prestigious museums collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Michael works on small groups of works - in series; creating groups of paintings incorporating gelatin silver prints, and then a separate but connected groups of paintings incorporating gelatin silver prints that deal with the same ideas and compositional values. His images are challenging: dynamic abstract compositions that have a strong sense of power while maintaining a quiet meditative state. His drawings and photographs contain a great sense of mystery. His palette, according to the series he is working on, falls on either side of the color scale - working on a series using variations of white, or variations of dark somber colors."
