Jill Mathis was born in San Antonio, Texas and attended the University of Texas in San Antonio and Austin studying photojournalism. She lived for several years in New York City where she worked as a fashion photographer. She also was an assistant to photographer Ralph Gibson. Her work is a mix between color and black and white images. Jill Mathis feels there is a strong connection between images and text in popular culture. Mathis often incorporates text, for instance a single word, into her printed photos. The museum label then explains the text more fully. Her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, NYC; and the International Center of Photography, NYC. She currently lives in northern Italy where her work focuses on etymology. She is quite approachable and can be followed on Facebook.
