Selby Majewski Bean ’10

Conservation Education Administrator – Cleveland Metroparks
Cleveland, OH

Biography

Currently, Selby works as the Conservation Education Administrator at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. In this role, she is involved in all aspects of the education division such as strategic planning, scholarships, budgeting, and day-to-day logistics.

Previously as a naturalist, her job was to connect visitors and program participants to the natural world. She’s able to do that through many avenues; presenting school programs, hosting school groups, leading summer camps, visiting nursing homes, leading adult hikes, developing programs, leading volunteers to check bluebird boxes, designing and executing special events, and answering questions from the public at the nature center are a few. She’s particularly enjoyed interpreting new natural resource projects, such as sustainable forestry or golf course restoration.

She came to this job through education work at the Wilds, Columbus Zoo, Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, and graduate school at Slippery Rock University. It’s an awesome way to be involved in both science and education; every day is different and she’s able to pursue her passions and share them with others.

Selby is happy to be contacted by Women in Science students, science student groups, education groups, zoology, or environmental studies groups.

  • Speaking with a student virtually or on the phone
  • Presenting to a student organization
  • Conducting a virtual webinar
  • Assisting OWU Alumni (recent Alumni, or Alumni in transition)
  • Hosting a “Career Trek/visit” with a group of students & OWU staff

During her time at Ohio Wesleyan, Selby majored in Pre-Professional Zoology and Environmental Studies and was involved in Delta Zeta, the Outdoor Ministry Team, and the Honors Board.
