Primary Aim

The primary aim of this documentary is to let the viewer know about how obesity and the current health standard and availabilities are affecting the country and everyone that is involved in this issue. The key message they were trying to convey was that the issue, the task at hand so to speak, needs to be taken care of with the best and brightest minds at the helm to lead to a healthier and better lifestyle. Descriptions from the film would be the constant newscasts that involved the climbing numbers in obesity amongst the child and adult population, the speaking of Michelle Obama on the issue as how it is costing the countries billions of dollars, and the few examples of people who had to deal with what is going on involving the vast majority of civilians affected by the causes of obesity.

Key Ideologies

The main ideology that was promoted in Forks Over Knives is the adoption of a new diet- a food plant based diet in order to lower the amount of carbs and considered unhealthy factors in meats. Their goal is to find a way to lower the people who are dying because of obesity, from the high blood pressures to the constant increase of chronic diseases. The focal point is to try and move the people who keep trying to go the cheap and unhealthy way to the spend a little more but save your life instead. Some quotes that support these would be “the consumption of unnaturally dense foods is the main cause for the epidemic of obesity in America” and “Let food be thy medicine”. Each of these quotes provided some evidence to the fact of being affected negatively by the constant rise in obesity and also in the attempted fix in trying to correct the problem as best as they can.

Some of the key storylines that helped promote these ideologies and focal points of the movie would be Dr. Esselstyn and her endeavors in trying to help those who are affected by heart disease and issues due to obesity or Joey Aucoin who talked about how he lived to eat, rather than trying to eat specifically for his own health related benefit. These people were really committed to try and correct themselves and the situations that they were involved in with every single strategy that they could muster up. With their involvement, it helped lead to a more backed and empowered cause in the health field with what all they could do as well as the food industry in how they can try to alter whatever may be the main cause or dilemma of their issues they are having.

Linkages to Class

Some linkages that I could make so far in class would be the quizzes we have done so far and the consistent discussion on food advertisement and the targeting of their market. The constant use of these companies of trying to target the people who are already suffering from obesity and the health issues that followed is horrid and vile. There are people however, that are trying to put these causes to an end by updating the health guidelines and structures that these companies need to follow. There are doctors who are becoming more and more skilled with patients suffering from these issues. There are people who are trying to make a change.

Personal Opinion

Our informed opinion on this film is that these people who are trying to make a difference actively and are always trying to find the best solution in trying to get the obesity numbers down to zero. Some strengths of this article would be the evidence they supply and the type of people they use in the film. A weakness in my opinion would be the diet itself. We reviewed the diet itself and saw that nearly half of the people who adopted the diet, started to have the negative effects they were already feeling actually increased.
