Fresh Take

In-Class Discussion

  1. What, in your opinion, are the current important health issues that are directly related to food.
    1. Specifically, what are they, and why are they so important in today’s society?

Processed foods are leading to malnutrition within our communities and this relates to anxiety and obesity. Another major problem is unequal food distribution within communities with lower incomes and less access to foods.

  1. How, in your opinion, does food impact these problems?

Consumers take in these foods that are full of hormones and processed. The quality of food is lower and in contributing to food insecurity and malnutrition, as well as eating disorders. There is also the lack of food available to certain communities and groups so the food that is available is usually not as healthy as it is in some areas.

  1. What, in your opinion, are the key components to a healthy diet?

Balanced meals, variety, number of meals a day, avoiding junk food and sticking to more natural food goods.

  1. From a health perspective, what is “good” food? What is “bad” food? Use some examples.

Are foods should not be black and white, there are areas that cross over. The term good and bad could be subjective to what is good emotionally vs physically or emotionally.

  1. Please find two examples of food advertisements that have a health message. It can be overt and clear, or subtle and implied. These can be web advertisements, audio advertisements, or video advertisements.
    1. Please include the link to a web location here:
      1. Subway – Eat Fresh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz_q34URLM0
      2. Wendy’s- all natural beef https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDVvYC46_V8
    2. Considering the advertisements that you selected….
      1. Are your selected advertisements effective in addressing the key health issues you mentioned above? Why or why not?

I would say that they are somewhat effective. People see Subway as a healthier alternative to other fast food restaurants. Their products seem fresher and healthier than their competitors. Wendy’s advertising also focuses on freshness in their products. I think advertising fresh products if effective in this day and age, consumers seem to be warning  to know that what they are eating is fresh and not frozen and full of good nutrients.
