Food is Healthy?

What, in your opinion, are the current important health issues that are directly related to food.

Specifically, what are they, and why are they so important in today’s society?

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Food scarcity
    • Food deserts

They all harm people in different ways. Many of them can cause illness or death.

How, in your opinion, does food impact these problems?

  • By eating too much, too little, or the wrong things these illnesses can occur.
  • And environmental racism, and classism cause food scarcity.

What, in your opinion, are the key components to a healthy diet?

  • Big variety of foods
  • Each food group (protein, veg, fruit, grains, dairy, etc)

From a health perspective, what is “good” food? What is “bad” food? Use some examples.

  • Everything depends on the individual (metabolisms differ)
  • Good food: whole, local, fresh, not processed
  • Bad food: processed, high in nutrients that can harm (sugar, salt, fat, etc), unnatural ingredients

Please find two examples of food advertisements that have a health message. It can be overt and clear, or subtle and implied. These can be web advertisements, audio advertisements, or video advertisements.

Considering the advertisements that you selected….

Are your selected advertisements effective in addressing the key health issues you mentioned above? Why or why not?

  • Mcdonald’s- addresses balanced meal/ variety. But it also has processed elements.
  • Cereal- tries to seem organic or natural but in reality, it is processed. Appeals to a health crowd wanting whole foods.
  • They both try to portray “good” foods but both have unhealthy processed elements.
