But&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>It\u2019s easy to start projects, but hard to make real things happen.<\/li>\n<li>Lots of started projects, few completed.<\/li>\n<li>It takes time. We are invasive species. We are parasites. We are all going to die and we deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>Our carbon footprint is \u201cthe gaseous equivalent of Original Sin, &#8230;the stain that we inflict on Mother Gaia by the simple fact of being present and breathing\u2026\u201d (2)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWestern humanity has taken a sudden dislike for itself.\u201d (2)<\/p>\n<p>An era of ecological apocalyptic catastrophism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaving the world requires us to denigrate everything that has to do with the spirit of enterprise and the taste for discovery.\u201d (15)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vision of the earth as an impoverished family that has to scrimp on everything in order to get along. A rehabilitation of meanness and stinginess.\u201d (151)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEcology has a choice: declaring anti-humanism as its principle, celebrating rivers and forests the better to castigate human beings, or adopting an open anthropocentrism that embraces humanity, nature, and animals in general good will, so that no category suffers pointless harm.\u201d (100)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-432 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/sustainability-workblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-28-at-3.23.29-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/sustainability-workblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-28-at-3.23.29-PM.png 582w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/sustainability-workblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-28-at-3.23.29-PM-203x300.png 203w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/sustainability-workblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-28-at-3.23.29-PM-540x800.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stoknes, <i>What We Think About When We Try Not To Think About Global Warming<\/i>\u00a0(2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Individual action is largely ineffective<\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t opt out of the system, we like the perks.<\/p>\n<p>The message we hear: we are individually responsible for collective economic system impacts on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Cognitive dissonance: painless behavior (reusable grocery bags, recycling, etc.) that allows us to feel we are doing our part &#8211; and to avoid despair and pessimism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividual solutions are insufficient or even counterproductive unless they contribute to structural changes, too.\u201d (Stoknes, p. 89)<\/p>\n<p>The problem: <strong>It\u2019s a social psychological issue:<\/strong>\u00a0Stoknes, <em>What We Think About&#8230;<\/em> (2015)<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> environmental problems are often far from us and in the future: humans are not good at dealing with the future, nor things remote from us.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Doom:<\/strong> framing climate warming as a disaster to be addressed by loss, cost, and\u00a0sacrifice forces most people to avoid the topic: humans are loss-adverse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dissonance:<\/strong> when we can\u2019t resolve what we do with what we think; engage in symbolic but largely ineffectual activities (recycling, reusable grocery bags, etc.).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Denial:<\/strong> that there is a problem at all; humans do this in self-defense, believing that their livelihoods and lifestyles are being attacked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identity:<\/strong> humans seek information that strengthens existing belief and identity;\u00a0identity is difficult to change; easy to be offended if you think your identity is\u00a0being attacked; fear of and anger about being \u201ccontrolled\u201d by others. (73)<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives or libertarians don\u2019t question climate science (and other environmental concerns) because they are ignorant. Rather, it is a way of of expressing who they are &#8211; their identity. (74)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Scrappy Sustainability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students, staff and faculty figure out how to make sustainability happen on campus with no full time staff and few funds: sustainability isn\u2019t going to get done otherwise, at least in the short term. It is a good experience to try to make something real happen under challenging circumstances.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>Benefits to distributed, community-based sustainability\u00a0diverse group of active collaborators (vs. dependence on sustainability coordinator).<\/li>\n<li>many people involved: less likelihood of any one person getting in trouble.<\/li>\n<li>many people involved: diversity of ideas and approaches.<\/li>\n<li>excellent theory-into-practice and practice-into-theory experiences.<\/li>\n<li>it is possible to get some things done, maybe more meaningful.<\/li>\n<li>there is something a bit troubling about high-cost, conspicuous sustainability.<\/li>\n<li>building a strong foundation for sustainability, into which a sustainability coordinator\u00a0could step, and make even more progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To get off on the right foot, some pearls of wisdom from reading 10: Reading 10:\u00a0\u201cScrappy Sustainability: Presentation\u201d by John Krygier with input from students in Geog 360 and Geog 499, Spring 2017.
