macmillans_pocket_library_logo_1955A late 1940s redesign and reissue of an earlier Macmillan series of the same name. A few dozen titles, literary criticism, and novels for the most part. Following other Macmillan series (Golden Treasury Series, New Pocket Classics) the jackets are very plain with blank jacket flaps. On this 1955 first printing of Peacock’s Maid Marian and Crotchet Castle, a sticker has been glued on the jacket spine indicating St. Martin’s Press, New York. Macmillan started St. Martin’s Press in 1952.

A 1961 third printing (first printing 1951) of Chesterton’s biography of Browning reveals the MPL logo on the spine (covered by the sticker in the previous book’s jacket). A price sticker is also affixed to the front jacket flap (10s./6d.)
