Dorothy Norman

1905-1997

American (United States)

Dorothy Norman was an amateur photographer who took sensitive portraits of places and people meaningful to her, including many prominent early 20th century cultural and political figures. Her small images demonstrate exceptional clarity of vision, adept handling of light and shade, and professional quality printing. Norman met the famous photographer Alfred Stieglitz in NYC in 1927. Stieglitz became Norman’s mentor, teaching her development and printing techniques and encouraging her to make her own photographs. Although both were married--Steiglitz to Georgia O’Keefe--the two began an affair that lasted till his death in 1946.
