44 Pages, a documentary directed by Tony Shaff and produced by Rebecca Green and Laura D. Smith, follows the editorial staff of Highlights magazine as they prepare for their 70th anniversary issue. The docum

entary starts with the initial concept meeting for the issue (almost a year in advance of its distribution) and closely details every aspect of its creation in the months that follow – from hidden picture puzzles to elephant crafts; from reader submissions to miniature pizzas. Throughout the film, viewers are invited into Highlights

child-centered editorial offices in quaint Honesdale, Pennsylvania, its business offices in Columbus, Ohio, and the homes and offices of freelance writers and illustrators working on the issue. A description of the magazine’s long, illustrious history is also interspersed throughout.

The documentary places special emphasis on the core values of Highlights magazine, as well as the significant impact it has on the development of children. One especially striking moment in the film occurs when the editorial staff members are interviewed about the letters they receive from children. One recalls a child writing in about an abusive babysitter and how the magazine was able to contact the authorities in the child’s area to help keep the child safe. It is powerful to see the complete investment of Highlights employees  in the creation of “creative, curious, caring, & confident” children, an ideal that the company has followed since its start in 1946.
