what it was like, there, hidden under thin blankets<\/p>\n
in the summer when we wanted to sleep naked<\/p>\n
or float on rafts in your pool.<\/p>\n

Yes, yes, we were different than our parents<\/p>\n
who needed to talk through those nights,<\/p>\n
every night, red wine in tumblers<\/p>\n
or coffee mugs. We were not allowed to listen.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Why were we always alone?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I knew not to ask.<\/p>\n
After dinner we sat damp from the shower,<\/p>\n
our hair wrapped in towels, listening.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I still don\u2019t know what you thought about–<\/p>\n
Even back then we understood something<\/p>\n
about the nature of silence.<\/p>\n
