Last night crows paused<\/p>\n
on their way to roost<\/p>\n
in the sycamore outside our window<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
and we watched them bat and banter<\/p>\n
like any group of creatures in a small space.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They have the sky, of course<\/p>\n
yet they choose this<\/p>\n
closeness \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0which is to say, togetherness<\/p>\n
which is not to say, love.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In spring they will separate and build their nests<\/p>\n
as pairs.I sat the hardwood and you stood, chins<\/p>\n
meeting at the windowsill<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
purple-black studding on grey wash.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“Fall is gone,” they said<\/p>\n
over and over, in tune<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
with some signal among them<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
rising in a swell of wings they go<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
becoming all the answers they need.<\/p>\n
How can there be so many of them<\/p>\n
