The thought of going back to school after summer break can lead to a variety of emotions, no matter if your student is starting their first year of college or their last. It can be helpful to remember that you and your student are not alone! Other students and their families, as well as faculty and staff, are all preparing to start the next semester in their own ways. There are also steps and strategies that you and your student can start incorporating now to ensure that everyone has a successful start to the new academic year. First and foremost, it can be helpful to reflect on what your student’s specific needs and interests are, and what has been helpful with previous transitions. This awareness can give you and your student an effective framework to build from. Other steps can include planning for ongoing self-care, preparing to manage stress, putting together your support system, and learning more about campus resources. Among other helpful resources, families can find more information on helping students prepare emotionally for college here. These articles from The Jed Foundation and College Magazine also offer more steps and strategies that students may find helpful.
