OWU Physics Students Awarded Funding for Elementary School Outreach

Malcolm Henderson, OWU student and secretary for the campus chapter of Society for Physics Students, and Kyle Pellegrin, physics lab manger, were awarded the Marsh W. White Award from the Society of Physics Students. This competitive national award will allow OWU physics majors to conduct a meaningful outreach program to local elementary schools. By selecting local Title 1 schools, the OWU Society of Physics Students aims to bring age-appropriate demonstrations to elementary students that will ignite an interest in physics . In their proposal, the team wrote, “by bringing engaging demonstrations, such as how sunscreen blocks UV light, we hope to start an interest in physics from a young age. Our original outreach effort was a success. Additionally, we’ve had other schools reach out to us with an interest in having us visit their classrooms.” With funding secured for transportation and demonstration materials, these Bishops have the lofty goal of spurring interest in physics that will lead to more students being interested in studying physics in high school and beyond.
