May Move Out is a student-led project that helps to divert tons of usable material out of landfills each spring during move-out. The program was begun by Sarah D’Alexander in 2012 and has diverted nearly 10 tons of wasted material each year. The project involves working with campus departments such as Buildings and Grounds and Residental Life along with local donor acceptance from Goodwill. Each year we provide large pods outside of dormitories and other campus buildings to allow students to place lightly used objects such as furniture and clothes inside, avoiding waste. These items are removed by Goodwill to be brought to their stores for resale. This program also allows students to volunteer at the pods to encourage those moving out to donate instead of throwing their items away. The volunteer program allows these students to stay on campus past move out, which is great for those who want to see graduation or just stay a bit longer. Prior to the May Move Out event, which this year is from April 14 – May 14, we host a Mini May Move Out to promote the event to the community, which will be held Friday, March 31 this year. In past years this mini-event has been things such as having a donation pod for a single day for students to donate or a campus trade store, which is like a “mini store” where students are able to bring items for donation and trade these items for other donated goods. We have had great success each year and are eager to continue this Environment and Sustainability department tradition.
