Families,
I have a 13-year old daughter who never goes anywhere without her pink Stanley hydroflask. I joke with her, “you must be the most hydrated person in America.” We all know that the science largely suggests drink water! And lots of it!
I have great news–your child is getting WaTTER daily at Ohio Wesleyan. Wait, did the Provost just misspell water? I argue that a liberal arts education is like drinking 8 glasses of water a day. At Ohio Wesleyan, you learn to:
Write
And
Think
Talk
Emotional Intelligence (have and exhibit it)
Read and/or reflect
These are skills needed for life and they also happen to be skills we know employers want. In this recent article, a CEO reveals why liberal arts degrees are actually the best degrees. Why? They allow you to be the most versatile in a volatile world where AI and the changing nature of work are rapidly shifting what jobs may look like in the future. This piece suggests that contrary to popular opinion, “A liberal arts degree is the most pragmatic.” The American Association of Colleges and Universities has long reported what skills and attributes employers most need and the list will not surprise you–it’s a combination of critical thinking and communication skills along with the emotional intelligence to work in teams, to have drive, to be empathic. I use this metaphor of “WaTTER” with students often because it’s an easy and memorable way to translate the value of their liberal arts degree. So, rest assured, your student is hydrated at OWU– WaTTER daily!
Yours in life-changing learning,
Dr. Karlyn Crowley, Provost
