This September, the OWU community will come together to remember those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, honor first responders, and reflect on the lasting impact of that tragic day. The day holds special significance for Ohio Wesleyan. Three alumni — Doug Cherry ’85, Ted Luckett ’84 and Ann Judge ’73 — lost their lives in the attacks. Their lives and legacies remain an enduring part of the OWU community and are remembered through the Friends Memorial Garden.
25th Anniversary of 9/11 Event
Friday, Sept. 11 | 9 a.m.–4 p.m. | Milligan Room, Slocum Hall
Organized by OWU Advancement and Strategic Ventures, this campus commemoration will include historical documents, a reflection room, and a brief program at 12:15 p.m. led by OWU Chaplain Chad Johns ’02. Community members also may observe moments of silence throughout the day and visit the OWU Friends Memorial Garden.
Steps for Service: 9/11 Remembrance Fundraiser
Saturday, Sept. 12 | 9 a.m. | Selby Stadium
Organized by Phi Delta Theta Fraternity with support from the Delaware Fire Department, this event invites participants to climb 2,200 steps — representing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center — in honor of the first responders who risked and lost their lives that day. Donations benefit the Bryan Williams Legacy Program for local first responders and the Live Like Lou Foundation for ALS.
Twenty-five years later, these events offer meaningful opportunities to remember, reflect, and turn remembrance into service as a campus community.
