Mid-semester and Finding Belonging: We’re Halfway There!

October is often referred to as the “mid-semester slump.” By now, the excitement of starting the year has worn off, the workload is increasing, and students may feel the pressure of their first round of exams or major assignments. For first-generation students, this can sometimes bring up imposter syndrome – the belief that they aren’t as capable as their peers. Even strong students may start to wonder if they really belong in college.

This is also the time when homesickness tends to peak. Students may miss familiar routines, home-cooked meals, or simply the comfort of being known and understood at home. It’s important for families to know that homesickness is normal and often fades as students build stronger connections on campus. The good news? October is also when students begin finding their “people” and carving out their place on campus. Whether through a student organization, athletic team, or mid-semester class project, these connections help students feel less isolated and more confident.

Remind your student that struggling during the mid-semester slump doesn’t mean they don’t belong – it means they’re learning and facing new challenges head-on. Celebrate their efforts, not just their grades, and let them know you’re proud of the persistence it takes to keep moving forward.
