Tips for First-Gen Students and Families: Reflecting on the Fall Semester

As the fall semester comes to a close, it’s an important time for first-generation college students to take a step back and reflect. Winter Break offers a valuable opportunity for students and families to check in, recharge, and prepare for a successful spring. Here are some helpful questions to ask your student over the break:

Academics

  • What classes did you enjoy the most? The least?
  • Do you feel you have a good handle on study habits and time management?
  • Have you met with your academic advisor? What guidance did they provide about your course plan and progress?
  • Have you considered exploring potential research opportunities or internships related to your field of study?

Social Life and Support

  • How have you been balancing your social life with academics? Are you making time for fun activities?
  • Have you connected with any student organizations?
  • Do you feel comfortable asking for help when you need it, whether from professors, advisors, counseling services, or other campus resources?
  • What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far? How can I/we support you through it?
  • What are you most looking forward to in the spring semester? What goals do you have?
