Dr. Mary Anne Lewis Cusato, associate professor of World Languages and Cultures and director of the French Program, recently published an essay in Inside Higher Ed in which she advises faculty and instructors on how to make the most of summertime flexibility. It turns out that her advice is just as applicable to undergraduates! She writes, “…the past few weeks have reminded me of two other lessons we don’t often hear: first, that we can count on curve balls more than we can depend on plans, and second, that joy, not just a sense of duty or obligation, serves us well and keeps us writing.” Her advice is simple: Know that not all will go according to plan, and find ways to enjoy your work. That, she argues, is the true secret to maintaining productivity. So, welcome back, Bishops! Plan for the unplanned to sneak in, and find your joy.
