{"id":2840,"date":"2025-01-28T14:37:24","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T19:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/newatowu\/?p=2840"},"modified":"2025-01-28T14:37:24","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T19:37:24","slug":"how-to-be-a-smart-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/newatowu\/how-to-be-a-smart-student\/","title":{"rendered":"How to be a &#8220;Smart&#8221; Student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u201cSmart\u201d students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014take responsibility, value inter-dependence, and understand the importance of self-advocacy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cSmart\u201d students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014re\/establish priorities and set short- and long-term goals that will help them succeed academically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cSmart\u201d students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014begin studying (e.g., do homework, complete reading assignments, etc.) on the first day of the semester, study most every day of the semester, and take the appropriate actions as needed, one step at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To be a \u201csmart\u201d student this semester, consider these 4 Action Steps or Goals:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Raise you cumulative GPA\u2014i.e., earn a higher GPA in the spring semester:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set your semester GPA goal.\u00a0 Use the online GPA calculator, available on the Registrar\u2019s website, to identify the semester grades you need to\u00a0 reach your cumulative GPA goal: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.owu.edu\/ex\/GPACalculator\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.owu.edu\/ex\/GPACalculator\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify your challenging courses and use, starting at the beginning of the semester, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.owu.edu\/about\/offices-services-directory\/sagan-academic-resource-center\/\">academic resources and support services<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. <strong>Move<\/strong><b> from exploring and testing to decision-making about your major and career:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meet with your advisor if you have questions or concerns about a possible major.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Go to the Career Services website and explore their resources.
