I said, &#8216;Just wait.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2015 Judy Tenuta<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cProcrastination is opportunity&#8217;s natural assassin\u201d\u2014Victor Kiam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How am I impacted by procrastination?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daily or regular procrastination can ultimately result in, as some of you may know, sub-quality work, missed deadlines, loss of sleep, increased stress, and <\/span><b>lower final exam grades.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 OSU professor of Education Bruce Tuckman found, for example, that the grades students received in his study skills class could be correlated with the amount they procrastinated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe most severe procrastinator earned an average grade in the class of 2.9 on a 4.0 scale.\u00a0 Moderate procrastinators had average grades of 3.4, while low procrastinators scored an average of 3.6\u201d\u2014\u201cProcrastinators Get Poorer Grades in College Class, Study Finds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I determine my level of procrastination?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though it may seem counter-intuitive, your tendency to procrastinate may increase before and during final exam week as deadlines and test dates approach and stress escalates. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To determine if you are a \u201csevere,\u201d \u201cmoderate,\u201d or \u201clow\u201d procrastinator, complete this 10 question test today\u2014or, if you wait until tomorrow, you will already know:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cProcrastination Test\u2014Abridged\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">): <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/tests\/career\/procrastination-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/tests\/career\/procrastination-test<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I begin to overcome procrastination?<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Reflect on why you procrastinate\u2014and dig beneath the surface:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 It\u2019s not difficult to identify examples of procrastination, such as responding to text messages or attending a campus event when you should be studying.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s much more challenging, however, to accept that behavioral patterns often result from habits of thought and negative beliefs about your abilities.\u00a0 Some students, for example, fear failure or the responsibilities that go with success, while others undermine study goals by embracing a commonly held belief that reinforces procrastination: \u201cI work best under pressure.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Generate a time-management plan and use time-management strategies:\u00a0 <\/b><span>This might include prioritizing tasks, generating <\/span><span>daily and weekly to-do lists, breaking larger project into manageable parts, setting deadlines, and rewarding yourself after completing a task with 15 minutes of procrastination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Begin to develop an academic and personal study script: <\/b><span>After completing steps one and two, you may have a better understanding of why you procrastinate and may also have begun to address this obstacle with a time-management plan. \u00a0 You may also see yourself as a more responsible, empowered student who has taken some ownership of his or procrastination and will, soon or later, develop habits of mind and a behavioral script for studying and achieving academic success.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMy mother always told me I wouldn&#8217;t amount to anything because I procrastinate.
