Incoming Students and Parents:
As we prepare for the start of the academic year at OWU, we want to share important information regarding the use of Generative AI (such as Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.).
At OWU, we value human-centered learning and the learning process. AI is a tool to augment, not replace, human intellect, creativity, and the development of a student’s unique voice. To ensure these tools support rather than replace a student’s own critical thinking and skill-building, OWU has established a Generative AI Policy.
Here is what you need to know:
- Professors set the rules: Professors have full autonomy over how AI is handled in their specific courses to ensure that students can meet their learning objectives. As a result, AI policies will vary by class – ranging from completely prohibiting AI to using AI in specific ways on specific assignments. Students must check each course syllabus to understand the rules for each course.
- Unauthorized use is an academic violation: Using AI when it is not permitted by the instructor, using it in unauthorized ways, or failing to properly disclose and cite permitted AI assistance, will be treated as a violation of the OWU Academic Integrity Policy.
- Students are responsible for accuracy: AI tools can generate false information (“hallucinations”) or biased outputs. Students are accountable for the accuracy and originality of any work they submit.
Understanding these guidelines early is the best way to avoid unintentional academic trouble. We strongly encourage both students and parents to read the AI Policy and the Academic Integrity Policy before classes begin.
