(Part II)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Waking up this morning, knowing that our trip has come to an end was a bit sad, although, some people seemed very ready to get home. We packed our bags, packed the vans up, and headed towards Healy to get to the NEON data collection site. Once we got there, we had a tour of the phenology site that monitors three different species which are the top three species that show an abundance in this particular site.<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8168-e1527388793485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-386 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8168-e1527388793485-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8168-e1527388793485-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8168-e1527388793485.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The first plant NEON data collectors look for is the Betula Nana\/Glandulosa \u2013 they look at the breaking leaf buds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8177.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-388 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8177-e1527388936779-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8177-e1527388936779-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8177-e1527388936779.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second plant is the Labrador Tea \u2013 just as the Betula Nana\/Glandulosa, the Labrador Tea is looked at the breaking leaf buds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_4058.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-381 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_4058-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_4058-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_4058.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The third is the very well-known White Spruce \u2013 they check whether or not the needle buds are breaking and if so, if they are young needles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8174.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-387 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8174-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8174-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/mathclimate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2018\/05\/IMG_8174.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked around the half mile perimeter while observing these three species. Two things that were extremely interesting that our group noticed is that how little White Spruce there were and that the Labrador Tea wasn\u2019t as ripe compared to the Labrador Tea we have seen throughout the past week.<\/p>\n<p>We then walked back to check the flux tower and hut. The flux tower measures multiple different variables such as wind speed, wind direction, in-bound and out-bound radiation, wind speed and wind direction in three dimensions, precipitation. The levels of the flux tower depend on the canopies. \u2013 each level of measurement pulls different types of validation gas and is analyzed in the hut. We had a discussion and reflection on how combining the two classes were. Although I thought that it was more biology, today\u2019s NEON research site was an integration of what both classes learned.
