  1. Thanks for playing along with the new, COVID-inspired<\/strong> (required) format change for the class<\/li>\n
  2. Thanks for playing along with the unexpected move to a fully online<\/strong> course<\/li>\n
  3. Important to know some big ideas<\/strong> about maps, mapping, and GIS\n
      \n
    1. What is a map<\/strong> & maps as propositions \/ arguments<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Right Map Making <\/strong>and the ethics<\/strong> of geographic data and mapping<\/li>\n
    3. Critical Cartography<\/strong>, participatory mapping, crowdsourcing, citizen science<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    4. Important to know the guidelines for geographic data and mapping<\/strong>\n
        \n
      1. the Making Maps<\/strong><\/em> book<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      2. Important to get comfy with technology and software<\/strong>\n
          \n
        1. ArcGIS Online:<\/strong> Basic goal: you can do some stuff with the software and are not afraid of it\n
            \n
          1. Advantages<\/strong>: access for many, gather\/create your own data, integrate into existing technology (browsers, laptops, tablets, phones), makes aspects of critical cartography possible<\/li>\n
          2. Disadvantages<\/strong>: limited analytical power, more superficial projects, most GIS work still done with desktop GIS (ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
          3. Minor other technologies (GPS enhancers): but a fuller approach would have you develop an understanding of Desktop ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
          4. Dive into some extended Big Ideas<\/strong>:\u00a0how concepts (and rethinking concepts) shape data and mapping\n
              \n
            1. Desert Wonderings<\/li>\n
            2. Feminist Data Visualization<\/li>\n
            3. Spatial Data and (De)colonization<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
            4. Integration<\/strong>: ideally in the course project: big ideas + mapping guidelines + software<\/strong>\n
                \n
              1. Probably not fully integrated: but I’m happy to continue to work with you to do this, beyond the end of the semester<\/li>\n
              2. Can keep ArcOnline accounts: complete more of the book, ESRI tutorials and certification<\/li>\n
              3. Can download ArcGIS Pro (from ArcOnline account): new, more integrated version of ArcGIS Desktop<\/li>\n
              4. Can download ArcGIS Desktop (contact me)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
