{"id":44,"date":"2020-07-12T15:59:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-12T20:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/geog-353\/?page_id=44"},"modified":"2020-08-23T11:03:07","modified_gmt":"2020-08-23T16:03:07","slug":"what-is-a-map","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/geog-353\/schedule-content\/what-is-a-map\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Map?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>It&#8217;s a Map: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/webmap\/viewer.html?webmap=df8bcc10430f48878b01c96e907a1fc3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Wildfire Activity Web Map<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>It&#8217;s a Map: <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atlasofsurveillance.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlas of Surveillance<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Map: <a href=\"http:\/\/makingmaps.net\/2008\/11\/25\/321-definitions-of-map\/\">321 Definitions<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Map:<\/b> a &#8220;spatial representation of reality&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>spatial:<\/b> consisting of at least two dimensions and usually referring to geographic space<\/li>\n<li><b>representation:<\/b> something that stands for something else (in our case, something in the human or physical environment)<\/li>\n<li><b>reality<\/b> &#8220;the state of things as they actually exist.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Map:<\/b> &#8220;A graphic statement that locates facts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Graphic:<\/b> A visual display of marks that stand for something else. An airplane shape on a map implies an airport.<\/li>\n<li><b>Statement:<\/b> To put forth information, a formal embodiment of facts or assertions.<\/li>\n<li><b>Locating facts:<\/b> Tangible and intangible phenomena located in geographic space: what we can see (roads, rivers) and what we cannot see (temperature, radiation), varying in amount (population) and kind (vegetation types).<\/li>\n<li>But: &#8220;My show shoes are in my basement&#8221;: is this a map?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Map:<\/b> &#8220;Maps are Propositions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is a proposition?\n<ul>\n<li>the act of offering or suggesting something to be considered, accepted, adopted, or done.<\/li>\n<li>a plan or scheme proposed.<\/li>\n<li>a thing, matter, or person considered as something to be dealt with or encountered: Keeping diplomatic channels open is a serious proposition.<\/li>\n<li>anything stated or affirmed for discussion or illustration.<\/li>\n<li>a proposal of usually illicit sexual relations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Handout &amp; Discussion:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/krygier.owu.edu\/krygier_html\/geog_353\/geog_353_lo\/this-is-not-rethinking.pdf\"><i>Ce n&#8217;est pas le monde<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Some more jargon&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Mapmaking:<\/b> the production of a tangible map; the aggregate of those individual and largely technical processes of data collection, cartographic design and construction, reproduction, normally associated with the actual production of maps; designing, compiling, and producing maps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cartography:<\/b> seen as broader than map-making, as it involves the theoretical and philosophical aspects of mapmaking rules.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>International Cartographic Association (ICA):<\/i> Cartography is &#8220;the art, science, and technology of making maps, together with their study as scientific documents and works of art. In this context may be regarded as including all types of maps, plans, charts, and sections, 3D models, and globes representing the Earth or any celestial body at any scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Visualization:<\/b> The interactive use of digital maps to explore and understand data. Geographic Visualization refers to the visualization of spatially distributed (geographic) data and usually involves maps. Visualization usually means more exploratory, preliminary examination of data with maps to try and learn things about the data (and the phenomena the data represents).<\/p>\n<p><b>Geographic Information Systems:<\/b> Computer hardware and software for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and output (paper or digital display) of spatial data. Maps play a vital role in the analysis (visualization) and display components of GIS. an Art and a Science?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Borden Dent:<\/b> &#8220;The art in cartography is the cartographers ability to synthesize the various ingredients involved in the abstraction process into an organized whole that facilitates the communication of ideas.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/krygier.owu.edu\/krygier_html\/art_sci.html\">Krygier &#8220;Cartography as an Art and a Science?&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Cartography and Art&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>People do have aesthetic reactions to maps: maps as objects of interest, contemplation, and interest beyond their immediate utility<\/p>\n<p><b>J. S. Keates:<\/b> British cartographer: aesthetic responses to maps<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>imitation:<\/b> somehow the map reminds us of what it represents in a way that makes us appreciate it. A response to the work itself which is not dependent upon the object the work represents, but on the abstract form of the work (<a href=\"http:\/\/makingmaps.net\/2011\/12\/05\/map-art-exhibitions-2010-11\/\">Map Art Exhibits)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/krygier.owu.edu\/krygier_html\/geog_353\/geog_353_lo\/geog_353_lo03_gr\/johns.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Cartography and Science&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Science defined: a methodological and objective process by which we come to understand physical and human phenomena<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Arthur Robinson<\/b> and the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) during WW2: question: how do people react to different map designs?
