How to Recover Food

Updated Oct. 12, 2024

Our process takes about 30 minutes.

    1. Sign up for a shift (link will be shared with you when you join)
    2. Show up slightly before 4:45 pm at Bishop Café ready for your assignment (what you signed up for)
    3. Tell the person behind the counter you are with the Food Recovery Network and are ready to take the food.
    4. Get the food (preferably on a cart) and take it outside Bishop Café to weigh it (e.g., near the ground-level tables or mailroom or in the parking lot).
    5. Have someone stand on the scale, make note of their weight, and hold each tray of food individually. Then, subtract the person’s weight from the total weight to get the weight of each tray (for example, the person weighs 150 pounds, and with the food, they weigh 158; therefore, the food weighs 8 pounds).
    6. Record the food type (e.g., chicken, mashed potato, etc.) and the weight.
    7. Put the food in the car and return the cart to Bishop Café.
    8. Drive to Common Ground Free Store (about 5 minutes away) and text Patty Maxson and Savannah Domenech what food you are bringing, how much, and if any trays are frozen. Get the cell phone numbers from one of the OWU FRN leaders (Abby or Savannah).
    9. Park by the side of the building, carry the food in and set it in the kitchen.
    10. Congratulations! You have recovered food!
