Demand for bright yellow curry led turmeric processors to add lead chromate\u2014an industrial yellow pigment commonly used to color toys and furniture\u2014to their product. The bags, which have been around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/09\/13\/dining\/13tea.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since at least 2006<\/a>, are sometimes called \u201csilken\u201d sachets. They can be made from hemp, corn-based plastics, nylon or PET (polyethylene terephthalate). But most often it\u2019s one of the latter two: plastics.<\/p>\n<p>But research out this week in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.est.9b02540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environmental Science &amp; Technology<\/a><\/em> reveals that plastic tea bags are doing a lot more than holding on to your tea.
