Then, there are solution-seekers like Fionn Ferreira, an 18 year-old Irish wunderkind, who won the grand prize at the 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googlesciencefair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Science Fair<\/a> for creating a method to remove microplastics from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/oceans\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ocean<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"rebelltitem1\" class=\"rebellt-item col1\">\n<blockquote><p>Ferreira&#8217;s project used a novel, but effective methodology for removing ocean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/plastics\">plastics<\/a>. He used magnets to attract microplastics from water. The project found that a magnetic liquid called ferrofluid attracted the tiny plastic particles and removed them from the water. After nearly a thousand tests, his device successfully removed about 88 percent of the microplastics from water samples, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/science\/irish-teenager-wins-google-science-award-for-microplastics-project-1.3971256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Irish Times<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Via Sophia Bulander.
