It has been considered required reading literally for millenia. The Rare Books Collection has an edition of the <i>Iliad<\/i> published in 1660, translated by John Ogilby. It is a beautiful book, filled with annotations which summarize much\u00a0of the previous scholarship on the <i>Iliad<\/i>. It also contains a biography of sorts of Homer, compiling what was known about the poet\u2019s life as well as a comprehensive list of his works. Ogilby likely relies heavily on the Greek historian\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1738 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/10\/DSC00198-e1539895719391-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/10\/DSC00198-e1539895719391-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/10\/DSC00198-e1539895719391-203x270.jpg 203w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/10\/DSC00198-e1539895719391.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/>Herodotus for much of his information regarding Homer\u2019s life. However, what Ogilby was most well-known for in his time and beyond (and what is arguably the true star of this piece) are the lavish illustrations that adorned the books he printed, commissioning illustrations from some of the most respected designers working in England at the time.
