Congratulations to all who won, and all who applied.\u00a0This year&#8217;s winners are&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Riley Sutliff<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>&#8217;19<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Anthony Padget-Gettys &#8217;20\u00a0<\/strong>for <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">the<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Marie Drennan Prize<\/span>. This prize is\u00a0awarded for the best poem or group of poems by an anonymous donor in memory of Marie Drennan.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1515 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85761_IMG_4789-lpr-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85761_IMG_4789-lpr-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85761_IMG_4789-lpr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85761_IMG_4789-lpr-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85761_IMG_4789-lpr.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Kacie Iuvara &#8217;18<\/strong>, <strong>Nicole White &#8217;18<\/strong>, <strong>Sean Yang &#8217;18<\/strong>, <strong>Adriana Rodriguez &#8217;18<\/strong>, and <strong>Elizabeth Anderson &#8217;18<\/strong> for <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">the Class\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">of 1870 Memorial Prizes<\/span>. Fifty years after their graduation, the class of 1870 published their own alumni magazine, which they called The Golden Chain of Fifty Links. In it, they announced the creation of a yearly literary award of \u201cnot less than $50 to be awarded to a student member of the \u2018English Writer\u2019s Club\u2019 who, in the judgment of the English faculty, shall have produced the best original composition\u2014story, essay, drama, etc.\u2014in verse or prose.\u201d \u00a0Five awards are presented to students who submit the best original work in the categories of Fiction (<strong>Sean<\/strong>), Creative Non-fiction (<strong>Nicole<\/strong>), Poetry (<strong>Elizabeth<\/strong>), Academic\/Scholarly (<strong>Kacie<\/strong>), and Playwriting\/Screenwriting (<strong>Adriana<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1516 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85776_IMG_4816-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85776_IMG_4816-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85776_IMG_4816-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85776_IMG_4816-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><strong>Adrian Burr &#8217;19\u00a0<\/strong>for<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> t<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">he Edward J. Wheeler Poetry Prize.\u00a0<\/span>Edward Jewett Wheeler graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1879. \u00a0The Wheeler Poetry Prize honors a person who wrote a meritorious poem or group of poems.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Evelynn Wyatt &#8217;18\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Kacie Iuvara &#8217;18\u00a0<\/strong>for <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">the Emma Sparks Memorial Prize.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Emma Sparks graduated with the class of 1913.\u00a0 She married William L. Sanders also from the class of 1913.\u00a0 On May 2, 1966, William Sanders gave Ohio Wesleyan $1,000 for The Emma Sparks Memorial Fund. The income from this endowment was to be awarded for superior accomplishment in 19th Century English literature, based on a critical essay or research paper, with additional consideration of meritorious course work in the period.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Rebecca Porter &#8217;19\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">t<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">he Lucy Hall Gordon Memorial Poetry Prize. <span style=\"color: #000000\">This award is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">awarded annually during the Spring <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1517 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85767_IMG_4804-lpr-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85767_IMG_4804-lpr-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85767_IMG_4804-lpr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85767_IMG_4804-lpr-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85767_IMG_4804-lpr.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/>Semester to a full-time Ohio Wesleyan student, in his or her junior year, for a work of poetry judged to be the best submitted in competition for the Prize.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Lucy was born on April 24, 1917, in the small town of Palmetto, Georgia located about 25 miles south of Atlanta. \u00a0As she often said, \u201cPoetry drowned my sorrows and uplifted my spirits.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">For all who compete for this Prize, your works represent a shared joy with Lucy for the rhythm and rhyme of great poetry.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>LeeAnn Celapino &#8217;18\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Evelynn Wyatt &#8217;18\u00a0<\/strong>for<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">the Frederick L. Hunt Prize.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Frederick L. Hunt graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1894.\u00a0 He received his Master\u2019s degree from the University of Chicago in 1896. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">During the 1959-60 school year, an award was established from the estate of F. L. Hunt to recognize and promote student interest in English at Ohio Wesleyan.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">This award is given to the writer or writers who, in the judgment of the English Department of the University, have shown \u201cthe greatest proficiency and promise in creative writing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1518 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85725_IMG_4708-lpr-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85725_IMG_4708-lpr-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85725_IMG_4708-lpr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85725_IMG_4708-lpr-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.owu.edu\/engblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/118\/2018\/04\/RS85725_IMG_4708-lpr.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><b>Hayley Glessner &#8217;19\u00a0<\/b>for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">t<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">he \u00dclle Lewes Prize for Non-Fiction Writing.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">This prize was established by Mr. William Wolff II to honor Dr. Lewes because she had had such a significant influence on the life of his son, Ken. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The \u00dclle Lewes Prize is awarded to the student who demonstrates the greatest proficiency and promise in non-fiction writing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Yamiles Delgado &#8217;20\u00a0<\/strong>for <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">t<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">he T&#8217;ai Ananda Merion &#8217;96 Memorial Scholarship Award.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">T\u2019ai graduated from Ohio Wesleyan magna cum laude with a prize in English and Philosophy.\u00a0 He was also co-captain of the swim team, and was co-founder\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">and editor of the Satirical newspaper.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The recipient of this award is chosen by faculty who specialize in the area of creative writing, playwriting, and screenwriting.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">This award was established in 2000 and is awarded to juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellence in the fields of playwriting and screenwriting.\u00a0 Recipients will be chosen at the end of the sophomore year and will hold the award for both their junior and senior year.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Congratulations to all, and best of luck in your future endeavors!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are so proud of our Scholars of Sturges who received literary awards this year!
